Everyone who hates the new blogger two-word verification process please move over to that side of the room
And all who LIKE the new set-up, please move to the left
Yeah, that's what I thought....
A couple of things have come to my attention - some blogspot bloggers don't even realize that they have word verification turned on, because it doesn't appear when you are commenting on your own blog. And some bloggers who are using the new updated interface on Dashboard think that you can't turn the Word Verification (let's just call it WtF) off. Here's the good news: You CAN turn it off! You just need to switch (temporarily) over to the old interface in order to access the command. Here are the steps:
1. In Dashboard, click on the "Settings" icon (that's the gear in the upper right corner).
2. Click on "Old Blogger Interface" in the drop-down menu.
3. Click on "Settings"
4. Click on "Comments"
5. Scroll down until you see the option to "Show word verification for comments?" Check "no".
6. SAVE the new settings. (Important!)
You will see an option to change to the updated interface at the top of your screen - just click there to return to the new interface.
Reasons to keep the WtF:
1. Some people apparently get lots of spam w/o the WtF. I guess I've been lucky; the email associated with my blog gets very little spam (knock on wood!)
2. You really don't care for lots of comments, and like to watch people jump through hoops before they give up. (j/k......I'm SURE none of you lovely bloggers really do that!)
3. Ummm......I can't think of any other reasons, but feel free to enlighten me!
Reasons to NOT have WtF:
|no explanation needed here, methinks.....|
3. There are alternatives: you can opt to not receive comments from Anonymous posters, which can cut back on some of the spam, even though some perfectly lovely people won't be able to post unless they choose another option (like "Open ID", for instance), or you can choose Comment Moderation.
Personally, I prefer to leave everything as open and easy as possible, and hope that I won't feel the need to change that any time soon!
I hope this info helps someone out there - happy blogging, everyone :)
I've been wanting to get rid of the word verification but couldn't figure out how to do it with the new interface. So thanks for posting the directions...I'm now word verification free. So lets see what happens now! Thanks again!
Thank you so much for posting this! I have been wondering how to turn this stupid thing off. Even my 21 year old eyes have a TERRIBLE time figuring those dang things out. :]
I HATE that new word verification -- it's just impossible. Fortunately I have mine turned off. (I had Michael double-check just in case...)
thank you! I changed my settings, too.
I hope it works!
Thank you for commenting, everyone! I'm so glad to hear this is being helpful :)
Mine has been off because I hate using it when I try to comment on blogs.
Thanks for posting this!
I turned mine off, too. I agree it's beyond annoying.
thank you thank you thank you.
Thanks so much. Your instructions were perfect! And that's one reason I love your sewing blog. Just one.
Awwwww Martha - you are SO sweet! :::blush:::
Thank you for these instructions. I managed to do it. Word Verification was driving me batty, and was apparently doing the same for my readers.
Thanks so much for the great directions! I never would have figured that out. Love your blog too! LOL
Thanks for your comment on my blog with detailed instructions on how to remove the word verification, but I thought I had already disabled it, months ago, in fact. Please let me know if I do still have it, because I loathe it!
oops - sorry to mislead you Carolyn - I posted an explanatory comment on your blog (which I LOVE)! If any of my readers don't know Carolyn's blog, it's a must read :)
Thanks Jilly! This is just the help I needed. I will try it after dropping my kids at school:-)
Just turned mine off, too! Thanks for the step-by-step. Sometimes we really need to be guided to do what we ought to do. Love your blog and your projects!
I already turned mine off last week. I figured if I was having such difficulty with something then others must be also! What was Blogger thinking (or smoking) when they "fixed" the darn thing? I'm going to direct folks to this post, Jillian!
Thanks for getting back to me Jilly! And for the reassurance.... I'm glad I HAD successfully disabled it... all those comments telling me "how to" had made me a little anxious! Phew!
Oh JillyBe! You are my hero!
Thanks Jilly. When this subject came up on another blog I tried and thought "this is not turned on on my blog". I've just logged out and see it is on. Going to fix it and turn this off NOW!
I tried to follow your instruction, and I don't know what I did wrong; however my blog page was totally change and I don't know how to get my old page back? Helpppp
I didn't realize it was running on my blog, so glad that you posted this. Thank you!
Thank you so much for the feedback everyone! I'm really delighted that so many are finding this info helpful...and even MORE delighted that I don't have to strain my eyes on your blogs! :D
Not to mention that I'm discovering some wonderful new blogs through your comments :)
Thank you sooo much for this information and the step by step instructions.
Thank you, thank you, thank you - I couldn't work out to fix this by myself!
If there is one person who will not see what everyone else sees, you can almost bet the farm that it will be me! I have no gear. I just click on Settings, then Comments and it shows that I currently do not have Word Verification or any kind of moderation. Of course I have no way of knowing what shows up when someone wants to comment unless I am told. Sigh.
Those two word verifications ARE awful. So far I have typed each one correctly, so my lenses must still be pretty good. :)
Thank you so much for sharing the steps!
Wow, count me in as another user who mistakenly thought she was word-verification-free! Sheesh. Thanks so much for this guide, mine's now turned off again. (Did it automatically turn it on when it switched to the new interface? I know I had it turned off in the past.)
I just nominated your blog for a Sunshine Award, if you want to play along, the details are at my blog.
Indeed .. great clarification post. and Yeahh for less painful ways to spread the love on the sewing community x
I can never read it and I hate it! Looks like everyone feels the same!
Yes! I don't have a blog but look at lots of blogs and I hate the two word verification. I can never make out one of the words and it annoys the heck out of me to have to finally give up leaving a comment about something I really like because I can't get one of the words right.
As a blog commenter, I have tremendous difficulty deciphering captcha codes and the two word codes are even more difficult for this non-spambot, and after two tries I'll give up.
Thanks! Just encountered the "new, improved" two word verifcation when commenting and didn't even think that I had the same annoying set-up! WtF indeed!!
Thank you! I had turned it off on my blog but I just double checked it. It was back on! How annoying. =P It's all fixed now.
I hate word verification and I fuss everytime I have to verify words on a blog! I can't read those fuzzy out of focus non-words. Yuck! I had no idea, or I'd forgotten, it was on my own blog! Thank you so much for the step-by-step on how to remove it.
Thanks so much Jilly! I turned it off on mine, now. I dislike the new blogger interface, and was also just glad to know how to get back to the old one. :)
